| Get Better Gas Mileage and Save Money on Gas With gas prices being out of control, and SUV's ruling the roadway, most of you are paying a couple hundred dollars a month on gas or even more. Saving money and keeping your car's fuel efficiency is a number one topic nowadays. There are simple ways of getting better gas mileage you may overlook. These tips will help you identify the key issues to improve your gas mileage. So you ask how can I get better gas mileage every fill- up? Making your car more fuel efficient is the answer. Here are some tips to get more miles out of your tank: 1. Tire pressure. This is a efficiency killer. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration about 30% of all vehicles had at least one tire that was 8 psi or more under-inflated. About 5% had all four tires seriously under-inflated. The same survey showed that only 4% of respondents checked tire pressure as part of their routine maintenance. Purchase a tire pressure gage (usually $1.99) and make this a part of your routine maintainence. I check my tire pressure about every two weeks. This is the number one way to improve gas mileage with minimal effort. 2. Check your Air Filter: A dirty air filter will rob your car of fuel efficiency and horsepower. I recommend buying a reusable filter like K&N or Fram's Air Hog. These filters are freeing flowing which allow more air to be mixed with your fuel in turn getting more miles out of your tank. You can save money on air filters and get better gas mileage at the same time. 3. Need for Speed Drivers: Yes we're all guilty of putting the pedal down, but if you want to put money back into your pocket, be liberal on gunning the pedal. Your car consumes more gas accelerating from 0-20 then any other rpm range. So ease on that gas when the light turns green. This is a technique alot of people will need to get used to. If you want better gas mileage, you'll have to re-condition your driving habits. 4. Stop and Go Traffic: Sometimes it's hard to avoid stop and go traffic if you live in a urban area. The daily commute can rob gallons of fuel from your tank. If you can leave earlier and also leave a half hour later from work to avoid traffic, this can save you a significant amount of money on gas a year and score points with your employer. Even though it's difficult to due, your gas mileage will improve significantly when avoiding traffic. |
